The Traditional Pathway

Step 1: Complete a Pre-Medical Degree

• What is Pre-Med?

  A pre-med course is a bachelor’s degree that fulfills the prerequisites for entering medical school. While there’s no required pre-med program in the Philippines, certain undergraduate courses are traditionally considered pre-med degrees because they align well with the requirements of medical schools.

Step 2: Prepare for and Take the NMAT

• About the NMAT:

  The National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) is a standardized test administered by the Center for Educational Measurement, Inc. (CEM). It is a prerequisite for admission to medical schools in the Philippines and is designed to assess the academic capabilities and readiness of aspiring medical students.

• When to take the NMAT?

  Typically taken during or after your pre-med studies. The NMAT is offered thrice a year, typically in January/February, May and October/November.

Step 3: Choose and Apply to Medical Schools

Applying to medical school in the Philippines is a structured and competitive process.

• Application Process and Timeline:

  1. Research Schools (6–12 months before application)

     Identify medical schools that align with your goals, NMAT percentile rank, and preferences. Factors to consider include location, tuition fees, curriculum style (traditional vs. PBL), and residency affiliations.

  2. Prepare Required Documents (1–3 months before application)

     Gather and organize application documents, ensuring you meet each school’s specific requirements.

  3. Submit Applications (December–April)

     Most medical schools accept applications during this period. Be mindful of deadlines, as these may vary.

  4. Admissions Exam/Interview (April–May)

     Some schools require additional entrance exams (e.g., MCAT in PLM) or interviews to assess applicants’ aptitude, communication skills, and readiness for the rigors of medical school.

  5. Acceptance and Enrollment (June–August)

     Accepted students receive notifications and proceed with enrollment procedures, which include paying fees, submitting final documents, and attending orientation sessions.
